Choosing which direction to take after leaving school is a big decision.
At New Barn School we aim to provide individualised education for our students to improve life outcomes. We recognise that supporting our students to find the right pathway for them is a large part of this. We are here to support our students and make sure they know all the options open to them.
We provide our students with meaningful career-related opportunities and activities throughout their time with us. Our Careers programme is designed to give our young people the skills, knowledge and confidence they require to find and access a career they will enjoy and thrive in.
By using the Gatsby Benchmarks and CDI framework as a guide, the Incredible Futures and NCFE Employability Skills programmes as sources we have a careers programme that meet the needs of all students. Alongside our dedicated careers lessons the students will also receive advice from an independent Level 6 Careers Advisor.
The Gatsby benchmarks are seen as best practice for careers guidance within schools. We use Gatsby benchmarks to measure our program and complete termly Compass evaluations. The Gatsby benchmarks are:
- Stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experiences of workplaces
- Encounters with Further and Higher Education
- Personal guidance
We have access to Careerpilot, which can be used as a source of information during Careers lessons. There is a parent zone on their website filled with lots of useful information, which can be found here: https://www.careerpilot.org.uk/parent-zone
